CSS Guide Books
The template css file is the most important file for your template.
Basically the CSS file controls the layout of the DIV's, components, modules, menu's basically every element of the design is controlled by the CSS file.
In order to understand how CSS works then we recommend you read the following books to guide you through the world of CSS.
We have listed a number of useful guides / books which may help you understand CSS in more detail. All the books noted below can be purchased second hand from Amazon at a good price.
1) Eric A Meyer - CSS Pocket Reference
3) Cascading Style Sheets: The Designer's Edge
The above three books will provide you with a good grounding in understand how you can use CSS to have complete control over your web design layout.
CSS Tools
If you would like to customize a specific template from Joomladesigns we would recommend the following CSS software tools.
1) Pixie Color Picker
The pixie color picker is a very useful free utility when making changes to the Joomla! template_css.css file as it enables you to pick any color you have displayed on your screen and extract the HTML (#) values. This is very useful if you want to change color scheme of the design or CSS values in the style sheet. For example if you download a design which uses a blue menu text and green titles you can change the values in the CSS style sheet using the Pixie color picker utility. All you need to do is find a color you like by using pixie to hover over any color displayed on the screen and make a note of the # HTML code. Then open the design and high light the color you would like to change for example the blue menu. Now its just a case of opening the CSS file and doing a search and replace using notepad to change the colors for the theme.
2) CSS Style Master
CSS style master is great for editing the template_css.css file. Its not free but its worth every penny as it enables you to open the designs CSS file and make changes in a live editing mode. Once you open the template_css.css file in style master the design will appear in a editor window. From here you can change which ever CSS value you like. This provides you with complete control over the layout using CSS so you can change the sytle of all the DIV's, components and module positions to suite your needs.
To download the style master software visit the westciv web site. Also checkout the tutorials they have on offer. They are not free but if you would like to understand how CSS works then the tutorials are great value for money.
Custom Module Positions
A number of the Joomla templates we have developed make use of custom modules called user 5, 6 and 7 which are used to display custom content in your web design
To setup and display the custom module positions please complete the following.
1) From the Joomla administrator area select Extensions and Module Manager menu
2) Select the NEW button to create a new module.
3) Choose the Custom HTML module
4) Enter the title for the custom module position which will appear in the module title.
5) Enable the show title and enable the module position
6) For the module position you need to choose user 5, 6 or 7 from the module position drop down list
7) Assign the module position to all the menu items
8) Scroll down to the bottom of the module and enter the text in the WYSWYG editor which will appear in the custom module position.
9) Save the module position
To display all 3 custom module positions you need to complete the above steps for each custom module position user 5, 6 and 7.
You also need to publish all 3 module positions.
If the design supports two custom modules positions for example user 5 and 6 then you must complete the above steps and publish both user 5 and 6 module positions.
If you have any problems setting up the custom module positions please log into the members area of the web site and open a support ticket and a member of the support team will be happy to help you.

Template Theme Layout is incorrect
If you have joined the JoomlaDesigns template club and downloaded the template you like but after installing the Joomla theme the layout is not as it appears via the Template Gallery then please log into the members area and open a support ticket and member of our support team will be happy to help.
Before opening a support ticket we recommend you complete the following first
- Read the installation guide included with the design
- Download the latest version of the template from the members area as we update the themes we released on a regular basis.
If you have completed the above and the layout is still incorrect then please open a support ticket and we will be happy to help you.
Display module positions for the Joomla Template
If you would like to display the module positions for a specific Joomla template all you need to do is add ?tp=1 after the index.php
For example enter www.mydomainname.co.uk/index.php?tp=1 this will now display the module positions for the web design theme you have downloaded from the members area.
You can use the above approach to display the module positions the template supports for both Joomla 1.5 and 1.6
Template Permissions
If you are attempting to change index.php, xml or image files associated with the Joomla template via ftp you may run into a known issue relating to file ownership permissions for Joomla.
To resolve the above download the JoomlaXplorer component.
This is a really useful Joomla component which will enable you to manage and change the file and directory permissions on your server.
So if you wish to change the index.php file or image file and get a file permissions error then you may need to install the above component.
Once the JoomlaXplorer component is installed you can open the component via the administrator and navigate to the specific template directory and set the relevent CHMOD permissions on the directory or file you wish to change.
We would advise changing the permissions for both the directories and files to CHMOD 777
Once you have changed the permissons then you can make changes to the template.
Please note after you have made the changes to the template ALWAYS change the permissions back to 755 for the folder/directories and 644 for files.
Module Positions
Many of the Joomla templates available for download enable you to display or hide specific module positions.
For example if you download a two colum design and wish to hide the module positions on the right hand colum them all you need to do is un publish the module positions. Or maybe you wish to hide the latest news and news flash wish appears at the top of the web design again you can just unpublish the module positions.
So basically you are not restricted to one type of design layout.
